MyExeter

What is MyExeter

MyExeter is a new network service that can be used by students.  It allows you to connect all your devices to a secure private network, to provide a home from home experience. While primarily this is a Wi-Fi service, depending on your location it can also be used for Wired ethernet devices.  At present this is only available via Student bedrooms in Cohen Quad.

Why Should I use My Exeter?

MyExeter has several benefits over Eduroam

  1. MyExeter supports any type of device laptops, printers, smart speakers, games consoles etc..  Eduroam on the other hand can only be used by Wi-Fi devices which support enhanced security protocol which generally mean its useable for laptops and tablets only.  Devices like Amazon Alexa’s, Games Consoles etc. wont support these and as such are unsuitable for Eduroam.
  2. A personal network for all your devices.  Eduroam is secure in that no devices can talk to any other device, which is great for security but not if you want to print to personal printer over Wi-Fi.  By connecting your devices to the same PSK registered to you, it creates a Personal network enabling a true home from home experience.
  3. It’s a fully managed Exeter College service.  Eduroam is a university system and as such Exeter College as no control of it or visibility on problems.  Often many problems with Eduroam are nothing to do with Wi-Fi.

How do I connect to MyExeter?

All student need to register.  Once registered then you will use receive a unique Pre-Shared Key (PSK) just like you would have at home.

You can register either College or in advance at home.

cloudpath registermac

The MAC address is the unique ID of the network interface and it allows Exeter College to link the device to your account and ensure that all devices are on the same network for a truly home from home experience.

You will need to find this by searching the internet for “how do I find the MAC address for <OS/Device>” were <OS/Device> is the operating system or device.  NB: Make sure you give the MAC address of the Wired Ethernet adapter and not the Wi-Fi adapter if your device has both
